Day 22: Coats
It’s summer! Do you really need 37 winter coats at the ready? Think about it, how many coats did you even wear last season? Time to say goodbye to that coat you “might wear if it snows sideways in April” because it hasn’t seen daylight in 10 years.
Step 1: Check the forecast of reality
Be honest about your climate. If you live somewhere that sees snow once every five years, you probably don’t need 3 parkas. Keep one as a just in case.
Step 2: Follow the 2 year rule
If you haven’t worn it in the past 2 years, through all the seasons, it’s likely just taking up space.
Step 3: Fit & Function
If a coat is too tight, too itchy, or makes you look like a lumpy marshmallow, it’s not serving you. Keep the ones you feel good in and naturally gravitate toward.
Have a rain coat that doesn’t actually repel rain? Good Riddance!
Step 4: Duplicate Decisions
How many black puffer jackets does one person need? If you have multiple similar looking coats, pick your favorite one and say goodbye to the rest. Consider donating your excess to a local charity. Think of how many people could use a good winter coat and just don’t have the means.
